To all members of the Alabama House Committee on Health,

The House Committee on Health will be voting on HB-2, The Alabama Medical Marijuana Patients’ Rights Act, on Wednesday February 6.  When passed, House Bill 2 would enact a limited exception to Alabama's criminal laws to permit the doctor-advised medical use of cannabis by patients with serious medical conditions. At the same time, it will not alter or interfere with already existing state laws discouraging the non-medical, personal use of marijuana.

Voters strongly support this change in law.

According to a December 2012 CBS News nationwide telephone poll of 1,100 adults, 83 percent of Americans favor allowing doctors to authorize specified amounts of marijuana for patients suffering from serious illnesses. Furthermore, a poll, by the Mobile Press Register and the University of South Alabama, found that 76% of Alabama residents support the use of marijuana by seriously ill patients under a physician’s care.

Eighteen states -- Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington and the District of Columbia -- have enacted laws protecting medical marijuana patients from state prosecution. Patients in these states enjoy legal protections to use medicinal marijuana under a doctor's supervision; seriously ill citizens in Alabama deserve this same protection.

The use of marijuana as medicine is a public health issue; it should not be a criminal issue. I JOIN WITH ALABAMA MEDICAL MARIJUANA COALITION AND ALABAMA PATIENTS’ RIGHTS COALITION IN URGING YOU TO SUPPORT HOUSE BILL 2, THE ALABAMA MEDICAL MARIJUANA PATIENTS’ RIGHTS ACT.

i am 67 years old served my country and an outstanding messianic minister. for ever in pain from many problem such as bad back 2 operations did not help,pain from diabetes and bad arthritis plus more. i do not smoke anymore because of asthma and c.o.p.d. marijuana would help because i tried it in brownies and in brewing coffee. i don’t use it now because it is against Alabama state law.but i would if the bill passes.
